FDA, ‘천연’ 식용 색소를 사용한 식품에 ‘인공 색소 무첨가’라고 표시할 수 있게 허용(FDA Allows Foods with ‘Natural’ Food Dyes to Claim ‘No Artificial Colors’)… ‘비트 루트 레드’ 새로 허용, ‘스피룰리나’ 용도 확대

-2026년 2월 5일 ‘인공 색소 무첨가 표기에 대한 새로운 접근 방식 도입’ (New Approach to ‘No Artificial Colors’ Claims) 발표

FDA는 이날 “석유계 인공 색소에서 천연 원료에서 추출한 대체 색소로의 전환을 지원하기 위한 추가 조치를 발표했다”(took additional steps to support the transition of our nation’s food supply from the use of artificial petroleum-based colors to alternatives derived from natural sources)면서 “이제 기업들은 석유계 색소가 첨가되지 않은 제품에 한해 ‘인공 색소 무첨가’라는 문구를 사용할 수 있게 되었다”(Companies will now have flexibility to claim products contain ‘no artificial colors’ when the products do not contain petroleum-based colors)라고 밝혔다. 지금까지는 천연 원료든 아니든 색소가 전혀 첨가되지 않은 제품에 한해서만 이러한 표기가 가능했다.(In the past, companies were generally only able to make such claims when their products had no added color whatsoever — whether derived from natural sources or otherwise.)

FDA는 또 이날 새로운 색상 옵션인 ‘비트 루트 레드'(beetroot red)를 승인하고 천연 자원에서 추출한 기존 색소 첨가제인 ‘스피룰리나 추출물'(spirulina extract)의 용도 확대를 승인했다. FDA가 2025년 4월 식품 기업들에게 “합성 석유계 염료 사용을 단계적으로 없애겠다”(phase out the use of synthetic, petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply)고 발표한 이후 최근까지 가드니아(제니핀) 블루, 갈디에리아 추출물(파란색), 나비콩꽃 추출물(파란색), 인산칼슘(흰색)의 4가지 색소가 승인을 받은 바 있다.
